Airline Trail / East Hampton to Pomfret • May 10, 2020
Connecticut has been successful in developing their rail trail network, and northeast Connecticut’s Airline trail is a beautiful example. This is 41 miles of unpaved rail trail passing mostly through state parks with some big railroad cuts.
There are also a couple of very big viaducts which were created by burying long railroad bridges in place. When finished, the Airline trail will connect from the Connecticut River just east of Hartford CT all the way to Franklin MA.
This guided ride is best on a gravel or adventure bike, but a mountain or road bike can work just as well. Typical riding pace is 10-14mph. Bring all the food and water you’ll need. The van and trailer will shadow the ride on the nearest roads to offer SAG support. Elevation: +1528 -1601 = -73.
