Templeton to Rutland Water Loop • May 18, 2020
This 37 mile ride traces the Ware River Rail Trail and Mass Central Rail Trail where possible. The first 12 miles are a descent from Templeton to Barre along the Ware River. The last ten miles are nicely groomed stone-dust, in the Wachusett Greenways section of the MCRT inside Rutland State Park. There are a number of railroad cuts and causeways across bodies of water.
While the majority of the this ride is on unpaved rail trail, the rail trail sections are connected by very nice rolling country roads. Many of those roads are through or adjacent to Rutland State Forest. There is one newly paved country road that has the fun topographic feature we call ‘The Bathtub’. You’ll have to see it!
This ride is best on a gravel or adventure bike, but a mountain bike with a strong rider can work just as well. Bring all the food and water you’ll need. In case of a major mechanical etc, the van will shadow the ride on the nearest roads. Elevation: +1681 -2019 = -338′.
